Lisburn To Host Ulster Pipe Band Championships28 July 2010
Lisburn City Council has a long-standing relationship with the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (Northern Ireland Branch) and is pleased to host another Championship event. The 2010 Ulster Pipe Band Championships will take place in the grounds of Lagan Valley LeisurePlex, Lisburn on Saturday 7th August from 11am.
The championships will have over 60 pipe band performances for the public to see and hear over 6 grades, as well as drum major and highland dancing competitions. With trade and food stalls, and a beer tent on site there certainly will be something for everyone.
The Mayor of Lisburn, Alderman Paul Porter is given the honorary title of Chieftain of the Ulster Pipe Band Championships. Alderman Porter speaking about the upcoming event, said: "I am very pleased that both residents and visitors will have the opportunity to attend a Pipe Band Championship in Lisburn. It is a privilege to be have been asked to be Chieftain for these Championships and a honour to accept."
Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chairman of the Council's Economic Development Committee, said: "I am delighted that Lisburn City Council will once again play host to this spectacular event. In recent years, the Council has hosted European, and All-Ireland Pipe Band Championships all of which have been very well attended. It is anticipated that the Ulster Pipe Band Championship event will attract thousands of visitors to Lisburn City. I welcome the potential economic benefits that such numbers could bring to local retailers, accommodation providers and hospitality providers across the City."
The Ulster Pipe Band Championships being held in Lisburn are taking place just one week before the World Championships which are being staged in Glasgow; and this should ensure a high standard of competition as the participants hone their skills.
Mr George Ussher, Chairman of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (Northern Ireland Branch) said: "The organisation is continuing to build on last year's festival success and we are very pleased to holding the Ulster Pipe Band Championships in the City of Lisburn. Our special thanks go out to the Council and the Ulster Scots Agency for supporting this event."
